Why should I hire you?

Last week during a mock interview session, I asked my client, "Why should I hire you? What may differentiate you from other candidates?" His response: "I am an effective communicator, and I have great leadership skills."

Think about it? Does this response "differentiate" this person? Any number of people could give this same general response; the key is to follow up with examples. A better response would have been, "I am an effective communicator, and I have great leadership skills. For example, I transformed an under-performing sales team from last place to first place in only 3 months ... and I could do the same for you!"

Before your interview, take the time to think about your value. What do you feel proud about accomplishing in current (or past) positions. Did you find ways to save money, make money, or streamline procedures? Did you solve a big problem? Then, when you're asked the question, "Why should I hire you?", you will have an answer with a specific example that distinguishes you.
