Why do you want to leave your job?

You're in an interview. Things are going well. Then, you're asked the question, "Why do you want to leave your current job?"

People leave jobs for different reasons, but in most cases, people leave because they are unhappy about something(s). No matter what your reason for wanting to leave, always remain positive and NEVER disparage a current employer or coworkers.

Here are some common, acceptable reasons for leaving:
  • Looking for a new challenge
  • Just graduated from college
  • Current employer is downsizing
  • Advancement opportunities are limited
  • Relocating

Beware of these responses that send up red flags:
  • Personality conflicts
  • Not being paid enough
  • Not respected

Attitude matters. People are naturally drawn to positive people, and talking negatively will not leave a good impression.
