Recent Grads: The "Perfect" Job Candidate

According to results of a survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), employers in today’s tight job market cite their top qualities and attributes for a perfect job candidate.

In the study (conducted mid-August – October 3, 2008), 70 percent of respondents stated they screen recent grads by GPA, with 3.0 being the cutoff. If the student passes that hurdle, then employers consider the following attributes: communication skills, strong work ethic, ability to work in a team, and initiative. Employers also emphasized leadership experience and indicated if there are two otherwise equally qualified candidates, they will choose the one who exhibited leadership skills versus just being involved in extracurricular activities. Finally, employers desire candidates with relevant work experience.
