8 Things to Consider Before Sending a Thank You Note

When it comes to sending a thank you, clients often ask me, "Should I send an emailed thank you or a handwritten note?" Here are what hiring managers revealed in a survey I conducted in Fall 2014 (72 responses):

Doesn't Matter:  54%
Handwritten:  34%
Emailed:  11%

Whether you send an emailed or handwritten thank you, here are some things to consider:

1.  Send a thank you to everyone who interviewed you.

2.  Obtain a business card from all of these individuals so you have an accurate spelling of their names.

3.  If you did not have the opportunity to get a business card, first check on the website for the correct spelling of the names, and if you cannot find the names through this research, call the receptionist to gather the information.

4.  Send the thank you as soon as possible ... preferrably within 24 hours.

5.  If there was something you wish you would of said during the interview, use the thank you to clarify. For example, "After reflecting upon your question about XXX, I was able to successfully achieve XXX in my current position, and I will do the same for you as well."

7.  Be sure to proof your thank you note.

8.  Finally, if you are not offered the job, send a follow-up thank you. Thank them for their time and let them know that if for some reason the person selected does not work out, you would still be very interested in the position.
